Like most (all?) big counter-culture movements, most of the people who were “in” it were not really there for deep seated beliefs. It was cool, there were parties and music, sex and drugs were plentiful. Then it was time to grow up put all that stuff behind them.
I don’t mean to disparage the whole hippie thing. Lots of people really believed in it and do to this day. I just think the majority were there for the fun then got back to “real life”.
Thought that’s where I was.
I used to manage a pizza place and we paid minimum wage. When I started there I made $6 something/hour. Years later we were taking applications through an online portal and it claimed we offered competitive wages. Minimum wage was 7.25 by then and that’s what we paid.
I asked my district supervisor how he could use that language. He told me it is competitive, everywhere else also pays minimum wage.
I used it once. Told it to pretend to be a centaur from Mars and explain how centaur sex works. Pretty fucking funny, but yeah it was a one-off.
I worked with an old Navy veteran at the time of the J6 riots. We didn’t know about it while we were working, but we both watched it on TV in our hotel rooms. Now this guy was extremely conservative. He once told me that the only thing he’s found to be consistently true in life is that you can never trust a Democrat. The next day we got some coffee and I asked him what he thought about it.
“They should have been shot.”
He was also mildly racist against anyone who wasn’t white. I asked him what he thought would have happened if a group of black people had pulled that shit.
“They would have been shot.”
I misread the title as South Africa so at first I was like what the fuck are you even talking about.
Actual answer: slavery, the civil war, then segregation, then Jim Crow, then redlining, and through all of it slave labor through prisons that disproportionately hold black people. All these things create generational poverty as well. Now it is seen in the attacks on woke and DEI. The United States is profoundly racist.
I tried to take a linguistics class in college and I just couldn’t internalize these characters. It was very difficult for me and I respect people who can.
Not much gets to me, but this shit is fucked up. I bet the people who work on these have horrible nightmares.
I’m a xennial. I was so excited by computers, and later the internet. It completely absorbed me to the point that I would get up an hour early for school so I could mess around with the computer before catching the bus. A beautiful (ugly) Compaq with a 200n megabyte hard drive, 2 megs of ram. 86 architecture. I was about 11 years old.
I played a few games, but I spent much more time messing around the system in DOS. Making batch files, then working with qbasic. Of course I played Nintendo games as well. After we got internet I used a 28.8kbps modem to upload my own webpage via FTP.
I remember thinking, even as a child/teenager, that the kids of the future were going to be incredible, being born into the digital internet age. I was so wrong. My classmates struggled with computers because they weren’t amazed by them like I was. Touch typing class had nothing on ICQ.
I think there are a lot of xennials on Lemmy. It was crushing to see that the generations before and after us can’t comprehend the basics of computers. Then smartphones happened and everything got so much worse.
His potential neurodivergence does not excuse the evil. The majority of autistic people comprehend morality.
Incel culture has always existed it just didn’t have a way out if its mom’s basement without the internet.
