Real world usage tells me all I need to know.

SMB isn’t really all that slow these days.

I have NFS and SMB shares set up (same directory) and copying files to/from them maxes out my gigabit LAN.

SSH on the other hand is slower, because there’s more CPU overhead.

You can get wifi pretty cheap. A $40 router will get you wifi. You’ll also need an internet connection, however…

I’ll just wait until the fitgirl sale…

There’s also the slightly-less-hidden cost.

Electricity to run your home server(s).

I would hazard a guess that If one were to draw a venn diagram of people who up voted your comment, and people who just a few years ago, told me repeatedly that trucking jobs were going away in a few years due to self driving trucks, there’d be an awful lot of overlap…
