Whoa, what are all those things you have?
Whoa, what are all those things you have?
Don’t forget the copies sealed in faraday containers.
Thanks for reminding me about this.
What is that?
My rationale with Debian is that distros are kind of like portals to entire compendiums of free and open-source software. With the increasing attacks on vpns in particular right now, I’m concerned there are any number of programs we take for granted that we might not have access to soon.
The internet is already deeply enshittified. There is a real possibility that it will no longer be a free and open web in any capacity soon. So it’s past time to make archives, and start setting up meshnets.
Nothing in particular that I’m aware of, just a growing recognition that things are very much not well in the US these days.
Curious about the mindset of the one (so far) person who has downvoted this post. What is there to dislike about archiving Linux and Wikipedia? 🤔
This looks promising, I’ll look into it more. Thank you.
I think you’re exaggerating about those sites. With an adblocker turned on they’re generally totally fine, and often a nicer viewing experience than some of the big streaming services - especially YouTube.
I actually wouldn’t mind playing directly from those sites in fact. My biggest priority is having a convenient home screen or desktop on the TV, and providing easy one-click access to those services to make it easy to use if I have guests over or something.
Yeah currently I’m just leaning toward using a docked Steam Deck, and using desktop mode with a wireless keyboard that has a built-in touchpad. The browser as is would be fine.
Maybe if I want to put in the extra effort I can see about adding the browser as a “non-Steam game” and set it to open straight to a streaming site, so that I can open it directly from gaming mode.
It sounds like they are basically doing the same thing Replicant does (they even mentioned Replicant), but based on LineageOS right now, and with enough resources to hire someone to work on reverse engineering the proprietary bits.
Not the most glamorous endeavor, but a cool and necessary project. Pretty pragmatic too, focusing on Android instead of mobile Linux.
It’s a Thinkpad P51 with a Xeon chip of some sort. Yeah I don’t know what happened there, only that switching to fedora without full disk encryption has resulted in much greater performance, like a difference between being able to do some gaming or not. So many variable changed there that I don’t even know if the crypto had anything to do with it.
I will switch to Android roms that don’t have that defect, and continue to buy and tinker with Linux phones when I can afford it, until they become daily-drivable.
Currently I have fragments of my data stored on at least half a dozen devices that I’ve accumulated over the years. My digital life is as messy as my adhd brain. I plan on setting up a NAS at some point, and will likely both consolidate all my data there and use LUKS. But until then encrypting one drive is the least of my problems.
Although anti-theft tech in my laptop might be kind of neat.
The type of partition I created was Debian’s default settings at the time.
This is where the threat modeling comes in. The laptop in question is not currently likely to be physically searched - nor does it contain any data that is likely to put me at any risk if it is searched, and the more prudent things I can be doing to protect my privacy have more to do with getting away from Android/Play Store, and being less dependent on other surveillance-capitalism services like YouTube, Google Maps, etc.
I will likely use LUKS again in the future, but there are broader overhauls I need to make to my digital life first.
Last time I had LUKS setup on my main laptop, there was a surprizingly sharp hit in performance.
I’m glad I have the option, but is it really the most appropriate thing for me to use right now? It just doesn’t make sense to talk about security and privacy without a clear threat model first.
Have they considered that they’re just not a great channel?
I didn’t say they were?
I banned Apple from my life a long time ago.
