Fedora and Proxmox are substantially different. Proxmox is meant to be used from a web interface only, and is meant to host virtual machines and containers.

An extremely appropriate use for you, BTW.

Fedora can be a desktop or a server, as can Debian or Arch or pretty much anything else, including installing qemu (vm’s).

The proxmox benefit is specifically that web interface, IMO, along with (if you had more servers) clustering. Which is not to put down proxmox at all, its on almost all of my servers (including a bunch for work).

That said, there are many options. You can use vlc or juk and control them both from a web interface. You don’t need a server solutions for audio playback, you want a local media player.

Mini PC

Overwhelming majority of my servers are tiny/mini/micros.

Audiobookshelf is what I do as well, for audio books and for podcasts.

Chaptarr may end up being the solution as far as arr stacks , but TBD on that, its not yet fit for public consumption.

Otherwise, audiobookbay is a solid option.

Personally I like fastfetch with dacrabs tweaks.

In terms of distributions, I’m not a good example of “so cool!”. Its pretty much just Debian. Stable for servers (with proxmox mostly), stable for my main desktop, two machines with Trixie and Sid respectively, then two test boxes with arch and endeavouros (for laziness purposes).

I like LMDE as a rec for others, though I prefer it with KDE which is no longer explicitly supported, so meh.

For family, if I’m doing it, its Deb stable all the way. Even my htpc’s are deb stable.

piracy does not

Piracy is actually a huge driver in both legally purchasing content and secondary purchases (art, toys, statues/models, etc).

The overwhelming majority of pirates also point to the extreme increases in streaming costs as well as the constantly changing landscape of streaming services needed, sometimes to even watch a single show you’d need 3-4 services.

I’d also point out that many out there just want their stuff to be seen. Freddie Wong and Matt Arnold recently made We’re All Gonna Die, which was made available in theaters and then a ton of streaming options.

They then pointed to the availability of a 720p torrent (I’m not going to say that they released it) so everyone could see it. Why? Well maybe people will want to check out their other content, buy merch, or subscribe to their patreon where they make other content.

But to say piracy is not a driver is incorrect.

Interestingly enough, cheaper on bluray at about ~$70 than on DVD at around $120.

Though cheaper still would be a yard sale, the library, or the high seas.

This is my issue now, I need more storage and the prices are ridiculous. I dont see them getting better soon, either, so I’m probably going to buy new.

Self hosting wise, not much, just ran through updates (I prefer to do this manually) and set up a new box which will host another proxmost host and NAS.

The mobo/CPU that became the new server has been replaced with an Asus prime x370-pro and a spare 1700x to be used as a new endeavoros desktop (their defaults are close enough to what I want I dont bother with full manual install). Mostly need it for a KDE 6 box for dev/testing to go alongside the instances of Trixie/Sid, since I’m considering arch for some work stuff that Debian won’t fit the bill for.

Just to point out its utility, I use rclone at home to sync my data elsewhere, and I use it extensively at work for internal systems and client systems.

Sync for replicating one site to another, bisync for bidirectional. Extremely flexible.

My FIL got back to me this morning, he’s only using an editor and printing his own music, so unfortunately no recommendations to be had there sorry.

Oh definitely they are my preferred overall.

I tend to find mostly dells, with a few HP’s and lenovos. Next to me are… 3 lenovos, 4 dells, and 2 HP’s. A few more are in the bin behind me I’ll need to test and sort out before I put into use (anything dead I salvage what I can).

Edit: And the lenovos almost always seem to have a full GPU in them which is nice

Completely fair, I was thinking of the little 15W desk lamp stuff, but the bigger/brighter incandescents could rival my desktop for sure!

Similar cost, more flexibility, quite a bit more power - usff PCs. Tiny / mini / micro, used. Less wattage than an incandescent light bulb, and some can compete with a pi 5 in idle power consumption.

I’ve got an elitedesk 800 (i5-7500t) clocking in at about 6W at idle. Take a look and see if it will work for you.
