The “cocaine hippos” are descendants of animals that Escobar illegally imported to his Colombian ranch in the 1980s when he reigned over the country’s drug trade. After his death in a 1993 shootout with authorities, the hippos were abandoned at the estate and left to thrive with no natural predators — their numbers have increased in the last eight years from 35 to somewhere between 65 and 80.
A group of scientists has warned that the hippos pose a major threat to the area’s biodiversity and could lead to deadly encounters with humans. They are advocating for some of the animals to be killed. A government agency has started sterilizing some of the hippos, but there is a debate on what are the safest methods.
“Legal personhood is just the ability to have your interest heard and represented in court,” Berry said. “It’s about enforcing rights they already have under animal cruelty laws and other protection laws.”
Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut touches on this subject. It’s a fun read.
Lemmings don’t jump off cliffs and they are not stupid. A sociopath employed by Disney threw a few dozen off a cliff for documentary in the 50s, for… reasons…? The story stuck. They’re just normal little rodents, tougher than most, as they can survive brutal winters on bleak landscapes.

That’s really interesting. I wish they explained how they “restored” the glycocalyx in the aging mice.
Dan Savage, the romantic advice columnist, says you should not move in together until you have been farting in front of each other for six months.

I have to do billing on a government (California) website monthly and it will not run on anything but Chrome. It says so at sign in, and it really is true. It’s the shittiest website I’ve ever used.
I feel dirty having it on my computer, and I get mad every time I open the browser.
They send me hand written Hallmark cards. They don’t know my name (yet) so mine get addressed to “our neighbor” but my neighbors get them addressed by name and are very creeped out by it. The latest one came during the LA fires and is about how “the bible” will help me “cope” with extreme weather:
I pick up a client’s meds as part of my job. It’s through Safeway, and I can’t get text notifications anymore when they are ready for pickup, I have to use the app, and I have to have push notifications turned on, so more than half of the notifications are some BS ad for safeway, trying to tempt me into buying bread or some shit. The guy takes over twenty medications, so it’s kind of a nightmare.

The root chakra (just above your taint) is generally associated with the color red. Heart chakra is associated with green.
Meditation is such a broad description, anything from a moment of focused attention to sitting for hours muttering a mantra.
I haven’t heard anyone talk of “growing” chakras, and I’m very much in that world, they aren’t like muscles. You would grow your awareness of your chakras.
If you consider taking a moment to be aware of the sensations, emotions and images in the center of your chest to be “meditation,” I’m not sure how you could accomplish your goal. Otherwise… do that.
I like to take a moment when I see something particularly beautiful- sun sparkling on water, sunsets/sunrises, a striking vista, the moon on a clear night, and “breathe” it into my heart chakra.
